Here is a clear **verse-by-verse meaning** of the **Śrī Vārāhy-anugrahāṣṭakam**, aligned with the Sanskrit text and traditional commentaries.
***
## Verse 1
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
O Mother, You are the true “string-puller” (director) behind the drama of creation. Even Īśa (Śiva) attains the status of “non-lord” (amīśvara) in comparison to Your supreme reality. If even He bows to You, who else is there, and what other prayer could possibly equal a hymn to You?
**Essence:** Establishes Varāhī as the supreme Śakti behind even Śiva’s lordship; the hymn itself is presented as uniquely powerful.
***
## Verse 2
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
For one who chants Your names, O Goddess, the staff of Dharma’s lord (Yama, or the cosmic order) merely touches the “drum” of the world (i.e., has no real power to harm). The ocean of worldly existence shrinks to a mere drop before You. Hence this remembrance of Your name is not mere praise—it is itself a means of liberation.
**Essence:** Emphasizes **nāma-saṁsmṛti** (remembrance of the name) as more than stotra; it is a direct sādhanā that nullifies karmic punishment and saṁsāra.
***
## Verse 3
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
From the delight of contemplating You arises an immeasurable bliss, from which a clear thrill (romaharṣa) rises in the body. O Mother, I bow to You; may there always be auspicious days. I pray to You, O compassionate one: “May You fulfill all my righteous desires.”
**Essence:** Describes the **anubhava** of Varāhī-dhyāna: bliss, horripilation, and the confidence that all arthas (dharmic aims) will be fulfilled.
***
## Verse 4
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
Your lotus-feet are illumined by the clusters of gems from the crowns of Indra, Śiva (moon-crested), Brahmā, and Viṣṇu. In my mind, bowed in devotion, You are ever reflected. O Bhavānī, destroyer of worldly bondage (bhava-nāśinī), may I ever meditate on You.
**Essence:** Positions Varāhī as the deity worshipped even by the Trimūrti and Indra; the devotee seeks constant **manas-pūjā** and reflection in the heart.
***
## Verse 5
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
As the Varāha-mūrti playfully lifted the earth, so You, as Vārāhī-mūrti, are the fulfiller of all aims (akhila-artha-karī). O Goddess, Your earrings shine like the delicate rays of the moon; You are the left-half (vāma-tanu-bhāga-harā) of Śiva—his Śakti.
**Essence:** Links Varāhī to **Varāha’s** earth-lifting līlā and declares Her as the active power (Śakti) who grants all four puruṣārthas.
***
## Verse 6
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
O Mother, those who meditate on You as a youthful form, radiant like molten gold, holding the discus, three-eyed, with the face of a noble boar—for them, even the gods bow at Your pair of lotus-feet.
**Essence:** Gives the **dhyāna-ākāra**: golden youthful body, three eyes, boar-face, chakra in hand. Such upāsakas gain reverence even from devas.
***
## Verse 7
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
O Mother, for one whose heap of sins is destroyed by serving You, even liberation (mokṣa) is not counted as a great achievement (it comes easily). Whose feet are worshipped by devas, asuras, nāgas, and kings—what prosperity would *not* find a vessel in such a person?
**Essence:** Stresses **sevā** and **pāpa-kṣaya**; for such a devotee, mokṣa is trivial, and all śrī (wealth, glory) naturally dwells in them.
***
## Verse 8
**Sanskrit:**
**Meaning:**
When You have entered the mind, what is difficult?
When You are worshipped according to the vidhi (scriptural method), what is unattainable?
When You are remembered even once, what is unbearable (i.e., what suffering remains)?
For those who have offered praise to You, what is unconquerable?
**Essence:** The famous “four kim” (what?) rhetorical climax: with Varāhī’s grace, nothing is **duṣkara, durlabha, durbhara, or durjaya**.
***
## Phala-śruti (implied)
Though not always separately stated, the aṣṭakam itself implies:
- Destruction of enemies and evil forces
- Fulfillment of all desires (artha, kāma, dharma)
- Easy mokṣa for the sincere devotee
- Protection from karmic punishment and saṁsāra’s ocean.
